However, it is clear that a larger percentage of people in Africa still approach this practice with a healthy dose of skepticism. It's not uncommon to hear the phrase "What I ordered vs. what I received" circulating on social media, highlighting the frustrations of dealing with fraudulent vendors. These bad experiences can make anyone wary of shopping online.

1. Check for Contact Information and Physical Address

 A reputable online vendor will provide clear contact information, including a phone number, email address, and a physical address. This shows transparency and willingness to communicate with customers.  Fake vendors often hide behind vague contact details or none at all. They might only provide an email address and no phone number or physical address.

2. Look for Customer Reviews and Ratings

4. Beware of Too-Good-to-Be-True Deals

While sales and discounts are common, deals that are significantly below market value should be scrutinized. Compare the vendor's prices with other reputable sellers to ensure they are reasonable and in line with market standards.

Example: Look for the vendor’s profiles on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. Check their activity and customer interactions.

6. Check for Payment Security Options

Reliable vendors offer a variety of secure payment options. Look for established payment gateways like Credit cards, PayPal or reputable local African payment processors like MTN momo, Orange money, Avoid vendors that only accept untraceable payment methods or upfront wire transfers, crypto currency or direct bank transfers. 

7. Look for a Clear Return and Refund Policy

In Africa, where a lot of people are first of all skeptical of shopping online, assuring them that their money can be refunded is something every legit online vendor must clearly highlight in their policies.  Transparent return and refund policies are a hallmark of legitimate vendors. These policies should be easy to find and understand.  Plus, note that fake vendors often have no return policy or an extremely complicated one to deter returns.

NB: Read the return policy before purchasing. Legitimate vendors will clearly outline the process and conditions for returns.

8. Test Customer Support

Contact the vendor’s customer support with questions about a product. Legit vendors respond promptly and professionally. Fake vendors may not respond at all or provide vague and unhelpful answers.

Example: Before making a purchase, send an inquiry to the vendor and gauge the quality and speed of their response.

9. Confirm Product Authenticity and Certification

Authentic vendors provide proof of product authenticity and certification, especially for branded items.  Fake vendors might sell counterfeit or substandard products without any proof of authenticity. Also note that fake vendors often use generic or stolen images and provide vague product descriptions.
