Essential Tips to Identify Legitimate Vendors from False Vendors, A Guide to Safe Online Shopping in Africa.
Shopping online should be a convenient and enjoyable experience, not one filled with anxiety and fear of scams. It is true that online shopping is slowly yet steadily gaining ground in Africa, thanks to the growth of technology and the internet. In fact, a recent study by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) revealed that about 24% of Africans shopped online in 2022.
However, it is clear that a larger percentage of people in Africa still approach this practice with a healthy dose of skepticism. It's not uncommon to hear the phrase "What I ordered vs. what I received" circulating on social media, highlighting the frustrations of dealing with fraudulent vendors. These bad experiences can make anyone wary of shopping online.
As a leading e-commerce platform in Africa, we understand these concerns all too well. We know that the fear of falling victim to scams can overshadow the convenience and joy of online shopping. That's why we've made it our mission to ensure your safety and build a trustworthy shopping environment. We've conducted extensive research and collaborated with experts to bring you the best advice. Here are some eye-opening statistics that highlight the importance of staying vigilant:
A survey conducted by the African Union Commission found that 54% of online shoppers in Africa experienced issues with their purchases, including receiving the wrong product or no product at all.
Research by McKinsey & Company indicates that improving trust and reliability in e-commerce could increase Africa's online shopping penetration rate by up to 50%, unlocking billions in economic potential.
Our own research at Buyam shows that 68% of our new users cited concerns about fraud as their primary hesitation in making their first purchase online.
These statistics are more than just numbers; they reflect real experiences and concerns of African shoppers. To help you shop with peace of mind, we've compiled twelve detailed tips to distinguish legitimate vendors from scammers. By following these tips, you can significantly reduce the risk of falling prey to fraudulent vendors:
1. Check for Contact Information and Physical Address
A reputable online vendor will provide clear contact information, including a phone number, email address, and a physical address. This shows transparency and willingness to communicate with customers. Fake vendors often hide behind vague contact details or none at all. They might only provide an email address and no phone number or physical address.
Example: Compare a vendor with full contact details and another with just an email address and no way to reach them physically. The latter raises red flags. When a customer visit’s a vendor’s shop on Buyam, the physical location and contact details are spelt out very clearly.

2. Look for Customer Reviews and Ratings
Genuine vendors have customer reviews and ratings on their website or third-party review sites. These reviews give insights into other customers’ experiences. Fake vendors often lack reviews or have overwhelmingly negative feedback, and sometimes they have generic or too good-to-be true reviews.
Example: On our platform Buyam, every vendor‘s shop has a review section where potential clients can visit to learn about what people are saying about the vendor. There are several places where you can find reviews of an online vendor; it can also be across their social media platforms.
3. Verify the Website’s Domain Name and Security
Legit Vendors: Check for secure websites by looking for “https” in the URL. Secure websites protect your data from being intercepted by third parties. Scammers may use unsecured websites (“http”) or domain names that mimic legitimate sites with slight changes (e.g., "buyamm.com" instead of "buyam.cm").
Always double-check the URL before making a purchase. A secure site will have “https” and a padlock symbol next to the URL.
4. Beware of Too-Good-to-Be-True Deals
While sales and discounts are common, deals that are significantly below market value should be scrutinized. Unrealistically low prices are a common tactic to lure in unsuspecting buyers by fake vendors. Compare the vendor's prices with other reputable sellers to ensure they are reasonable and in line with market standards.
Example: If a high-end smartphone like IPhone 15 is being sold at a fraction of its typical price, it’s likely a scam.
5. Research the Vendor’s Online Presence
Established vendors have an online presence beyond their website, such as social media profiles and listings on reputable platforms. Scammers often have minimal or no online presence outside their website.
Example: Look for the vendor’s profiles on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. Check their activity and customer interactions.
6. Check for Payment Security Options
Reliable vendors offer a variety of secure payment options. Look for established payment gateways like Credit cards, PayPal or reputable local African payment processors like MTN momo, Orange money, Avoid vendors that only accept untraceable payment methods or upfront wire transfers, crypto currency or direct bank transfers.
7. Look for a Clear Return and Refund Policy
In Africa, where a lot of people are first of all skeptical of shopping online, assuring them that their money can be refunded is something every legit online vendor must clearly highlight in their policies. Transparent return and refund policies are a hallmark of legitimate vendors. These policies should be easy to find and understand. Plus, note that fake vendors often have no return policy or an extremely complicated one to deter returns.
NB: Read the return policy before purchasing. Legitimate vendors will clearly outline the process and conditions for returns.
8. Test Customer Support
Contact the vendor’s customer support with questions about a product. Legit vendors respond promptly and professionally. Fake vendors may not respond at all or provide vague and unhelpful answers.
Example: Before making a purchase, send an inquiry to the vendor and gauge the quality and speed of their response.
9. Confirm Product Authenticity and Certification
Authentic vendors provide proof of product authenticity and certification, especially for branded items. Fake vendors might sell counterfeit or substandard products without any proof of authenticity. Also note that fake vendors often use generic or stolen images and provide vague product descriptions.
Our vendors on Buyam offer detailed product descriptions and original images to give you a clear understanding of what you’re purchasing.
NB: Check for certifications or serial numbers that can be verified with the manufacturer.
10. Examine Shipping and Delivery Information
Legit Vendors: Reliable vendors provide clear shipping and delivery information, including estimated delivery times and tracking options. Scammers: Scammers may have vague or no shipping details, with unrealistic delivery promises.
NB : Ensure the vendor provides a tracking number and clear information about shipping times and costs.
11. Verify Through Independent Sources
Legit Vendors: Cross-check the vendor’s legitimacy through independent sources like online forums, consumer protection websites, or industry watchdogs. Scammers: Scammers often avoid any scrutiny from independent sources and lack third-party endorsements.
Example: Look for any warnings or alerts about the vendor from consumer protection agencies or trusted online communities.
12. Assess the Quality and Professionalism of the Website
Professional websites with well-designed interfaces, clear product descriptions, and high-quality images indicate legitimacy. Poorly designed websites with low-quality images, spelling mistakes, and vague descriptions are signs of scams.
